Digital nomads and remote workers have long struggled balancing working while traveling, frequently breaking the law by entering a nation on a tourist visa and performing the duties remotely. Estonia was one of the first European Union countries to introduce effective digital nomad visa. Since August 1, 2020, qualified location-independent employees are able to apply for the opportunity to come to Estonia and reside there for up to a year with the knowledge that they may work lawfully.

It is necessary to point out that digital nomad visa in Estonia is only a long-term visa, thus it does not imply the right to work, permanent EU residency in Estonia or application for Estonian citizenship. To obtain temporary residency in Estonia and citizenship after the permanent residency, the individual shall apply for EU residence permit.
The application process may take up to 15-30 days to 2 months of the document review.
Eligibility
If you match the following criteria, you can apply for the digital nomad visa in Estonia.
- You are at least 18 years old.
- You have the ability to work remotely.
- Using telecommunications technology, you may carry out your work obligations remotely.
- You either operate as a freelancer for customers who are primarily located outside of Estonia or you have an active employment contract with a firm registered outside of Estonia.
- You can offer proof that your income for the six months prior to the application matched the minimal requirement. The current monthly income cap for the visa is €3504 (gross of tax).
If an e-resident owns a firm that is registered overseas or works for a foreign employer, they can fall under category one or two. E-residents can also benefit from the digital nomad visa in Estonia under the third category if they are doing their business through an Estonian firm, such as as a freelancer or solo entrepreneur serving clients mostly in foreign nations.

Documents Needed to Apply

- Valid passport Your passport must have two blank pages, be in excellent shape, and be valid for at least three months after the return date. Provide a copy of any prior visas (if any).
- A request form. The online application must be completed, printed, and signed before submission. Please make care you complete the application form completely and honestly. Remember that providing inaccurate information might result in your visa being denied.
- Work agreement. Show documentation that you have a working contract that is legitimate with a company or client outside of Estonia. Your company must write a letter confirming your intention to work remotely.
- Evidence of accommodation in Estonia. This document might be a lease, hotel reservation, letter of invitation, etc.
- Criminal record as a document issued by the police in your country of residence. This document must attest to your lack of criminal history in your native country.
- Evidence of health insurance. You must be in possession of current, Schengen-area-inclusive health insurance. Your health insurance must provide at least €30.000 in coverage.
- University diploma, certificate of training, graduation from your studies, and other certifications (if any).
You can also apply for this visa at a Police and Border Guard Board office if you are currently in Estonia lawfully and wish to prolong your stay. Make sure you give enough time for the application processing period if you decide to apply in Estonia.
