A repatriator is a person who is a Citizen of Latvia or whose relatives are Latvian or Liv in a straight up line and who voluntarily moves to a permanent residence in the Republic of Latvia. The right to enter Latvia with the returnees is the responsibility of his or her family: the spouse of the returne, the children of the returnees and his spouse, persons in guardianship or custody and parents who have reached the retirement age laid down by Latvian law or who are dependent on the repatriator and who have shared a household with the returnees in the previous country of residence for at least one year before claiming the status of returnees. Who is a repatriator?

A repatriator is a person who is a Citizen of Latvia or whose relatives are Latvian or Liv in a straight up line and who voluntarily moves to a permanent residence in the Republic of Latvia.


The right to enter Latvia with the returnees is the responsibility of his or her family:

  • the spouse of the returnee,
  • the children of the returnees and his spouse,
  • persons in guardianship or custody and parents who have reached the retirement age laid down by Latvian law or who are dependent on the repatriator and who have shared a household with the returnees in the previous country of residence for at least one year before claiming the status of returnees.

If you are a foreigner who wishes to obtain the status of a family member of the returnees, you shall submit additional documents certifying marriage, kinship, guardianship or custody, as well as documents proving the existence of a common household.

If a minor child enters with you, they must additionally submit an authorisation to stay in the Republic of Latvia by a parent who does not enter with the child, notarized or signed in the presence of an administrative or representative officer.

Documents issued abroad must be legalised unless international treaties provide for other arrangements.

Copies of documents not certified by a notary must be presented in the originals.
